Synthesis project; Painting class of Visual Arts College program

Explore the art of palimpsest, which consists of erasing completely or partially removing the image to create a new artwork. For this project, the canvas is reused in three steps.

Step 1: an abstract painting

An abstract painting of analytical and controlled practice, combining the self-referentiality and formalist approaches. Through process work, paint using tools other than brushes.

Came out an interesting work by the contrast of what it reveals, the abstract forms with the expressive feeling, but realized with precise and slow gestures. The organic forms that suggests the projected paint, has been applied smoothly and accurately using soft plastic and sinuous lines that reflects a spontaneous and lively gesture designed using rope soaked in paint and gently lay on the canvas.

The background, vibrating with a simple appearance, consists of thirty successive layers of mat glaze of black and white. With a subtle touch of blue to establish a complementary contrast with oranges.

Step 2: a realistic painting inspired by the theme of Unheimlich (disturbing strangeness) by Sigmund Freud.

The disturbing strangeness of the analysis by Freud on the “double”. In his text Unheimlich, Freud describes the factor as involuntary repetition which makes strangely disturbing what otherwise would be innocent, and thereby imposes on us the idea of ​​the harmful, the inescapable, where we would not otherwise have spoken.

It is strangely disturbing and anyone who is not against the idea of ​​superstition will be tempted to attribute a mysterious meaning to the two ravens’ luck and the very fact they are perching on.

Step 3: Create a palimpsest with an icon or a symbolic

The research begins with the symbolic of the eye. Inspired by the painting of “Air Surveillance”, the symbol of a spy, voyeurism. In the original research, integrate eyes and work related to George Orwell’s 1984. The work is commonly considered as a reference to the novel of anticipation, of dystopia. The main figure of the novel, Big Brother, has become a metaphorical figure of the police and totalitarian regime, of the society of surveillance, as well as the reduction of freedoms.

That leads to the polysemous eyes, in which often describe the eye of Horus. The Eye of Horus is a popular symbol in Egyptian mythology. It symbolizes good health, protection and royal power, and is sometimes called the Eye of Ra in homage to the god of the Egyptian sun. The symbol itself represents the right eye of the hawk, a bird closely associated with the god of the sky, Horus. In addition to an eye and an eyebrow, there is a tear under the lower eyelid that resembles the mark of the Peregrine Falcons.

With these two symbols in mind, a current interpretation of this feeling of surveillance has been painted, incorporating a revised and modern version of the god Horus. To keep in mind the aerial surveillance, the disturbing strangeness by the double birds, which makes an interesting reminder with the Horus in suits. Their collision by the sign and the formal clothing of a close guard brings to the point of the ubiquitous surveillance in our present society.

An illustration of sinuous, vaporous and organic forms that I integrate more and more in my process of illustration. These transparent waves were made with a mat glaze tinted with a touch of coloured white. They serve here as the mystery surrounding this reality of voyeurism for our good yet to understand in its complexity.
